Singer-Songwriter

Steve Godin

Steve Godin is an Americana singer-songwriter whose lyrics explore the soul of a nation grappling with the need for social change. A retired academic with a long and distinguished career in public health, Steve now devotes his time to writing songs which give voice to the marginalized and shine a light on issues too often overlooked. His songwriting features vivid, character-driven stories- capturing the plight of a  homeless veteran, the uncertainty facing a runaway teen, a call to action to address climate change, and the need for collective conscience awakening.

In addition to songs that address social issues, Steve also brings his wit and humor to his writing. His parody song Old Man Dating Blues, which humorously chronicles the misadventures of an older man navigating modern dating apps, won the Utah Chapter Challenge of the Nashville Songwriters Association International.  His parody song Compression Socks mocks the various cognitive mishaps and physical challenges faced by an elderly man, all of which can be remedied if compression-socked.

Music has always tugged at Steve’s spirit. At age 12, after successfully begging his parents to buy him his first guitar, he was set to begin lessons with his best friend’s father—only for his family to move away shortly after. In college, he watched his roommates jam with their band, later finding private moments to strum chord progressions with their guitars. After graduate school, he took guitar lessons briefly, but the demands of work and raising a family came first. Now, after a long and rewarding academic career, Steve has rekindled his musical passion. Since 2018, he has taken dozens of music classes at Salt Lake Community College, set up a home studio, and is writing and recording original music. After a lifetime of regret, he calls this chapter of his life “Making Music in This Final Stage of Life.”

Steve is also the co-founder and Events Coordinator of Humanity Helping Humanity Network (HHHN), a nonprofit that organizes music concerts to raise funds for local organizations addressing mental health, housing and food insecurity, and other social determinants of health. HHHN’s mission is both simple and profound: to blend entertainment with philanthropy, using music as a catalyst to increase public empathy and awareness of the challenges facing underserved communities, and inspire meaningful social change.
